Hydrodissection for Nerve Impingement of the Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common nerve compression problem of the upper extremity. It happens when the median nerve gets compressed in the wrist, commonly by swollen tendons and repetitive use. Hydrodissection involves injecting small amounts of fluid around the median nerve, under ultrasound guidance, to “free up” the nerve from entrapment. This procedure allows the nerve to glide freely in the carpal tunnel, relieving the symptoms of numbness, tingling, and wrist pain. Other treatment options include a short period of immobilization, activity modification, and occupational therapy. If symptoms persist beyond conservative measures, a surgical consult may be warranted for open carpal tunnel release.
